Have you ever wondered what it would be like to meet a person who has the intense determination of Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) from Scandal and the kind presence of Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) from Parks & Recreation? Look no further than the Forge’s very own Meredith Dewald, owner of Cypress Studios! Meredith is an expert Interior Designer who moonlights as a highly-skilled ceramicist. She has recently boomeranged back to town from Boston and has since launched her very own small-batch ceramics studio. Her studio is the perfect place where interior design meets ceramics. You can visit her website here! As if this wasn’t amazing enough of an achievement she’s also developed her very own signature creative process! She starts very ‘type A’ with research and sketching—really planning out her use of the wheel. Then she comes in and gets right to work. She makes what she plans but also throws what makes her happy to keep her creativity flowing and her work inspired. The Artistic balance is immaculate.
Meredith is always up for a challenge! Throughout the pandemic, she has had a plethora of custom orders that have called for her to hone her skills of uniformity, quick thinking, and innovation for sets of 12 or more plates and bowls. She also is considering mentorship here at the Forge because she enjoyed helping others at her ceramics studio space back in Boston.
Something you may not know about Meredith if you catch her working in the Forge ceramics studio is that she has major camp counselor vibes! She’s hiked in multiple different states and knows how to pitch a tent. If you run into her you should ask about the many places she’s been. With such a wide array of skills at her disposal, I simply had to ask “what advice would you give to new makers?” She replied ‘Well if they are throwing, just know it may be hard the first time. Clay may go flying, but it’s what you make of it! Stick it out and find your niche.’ Wise words from the amazing Meredith Dewald next time you see her say hi and compliment her on being such a skilled maker!
