January 2022 is National Mentorship Week, and we wanted to introduce you to some of our awesome mentors!
Our first spotlight is on long-time Wood Shop Mentor, Mark Schicker!
Mark has been with the Forge since 2015, so its safe to say he's a staple here at the Makerspace! His tenure started at our first location at 115 West Lewis St. "I was turning around on Lewis st and saw the sign. I had to stop in," Mark remembers.
Mark has met with countless new members to offer training in the Forge Wood Shop over the years, but his journey as a maker started much smaller: "I started making model airplanes. Then I moved into woodworking." Since moving into woodworking years ago, he's received training at Rockingham Community College and has since been passing his knowledge down to curious makers at the Forge.
When we were digging around for pictures of Mark teaching and mentoring, we realized we had far more pictures of the smiling faces of the people he taught holding their projects Mark taught them to make. Mark currently leads our monthly Intro Woodworking class and our Intro Woodturning class. When he's not doing that, he's meeting with members helping with shop training and projects, he's working in his garden, or he's running his Woodworking and Handyman business, The Schicker Shop.
